Winter 2008 - G-ROW is Moving
into a New Boathouse
Community Rowing's Boathouse for All Campaign
continues to make great strides in raising the $15 million needed to build its
new boathouse. As of December 2007, CRI has secured $12,960,000 in pledges
and donations for its 30,000 square foot boathouse which will be located on the
Charles River in Brighton.

Construction is coming along nicely as the
foundations are poured and the steel framing is up on both the main facility and
the Ruth W. Somerville Scullers Pavilion. In addition, CRI's four new
docks are in the water.
G-ROW is excited to have a new place to call home
although the major benefit to moving is that G-ROW will have a classroom that
will provide the girls with their own space for academic support. G-ROW
would like to thank Nancy H. Cahners, the Sidney and Esther Rabb Charitable
Foundations and an Anonymous Foundation for contributing donations to making the
G-ROW classroom possible.

Campaign please visit CRI's website at www.communityrowing.org
Spring 2007 - G-ROW medals at Northeast /
Mid-Atlantic Junior Regional Championships and at Mass Public!
G-ROW had a successful spring season with the second varsity
4+ placing third at the US Rowing Regional Championship beating programs from
all over the northeast. The varsity team also raced to victory at the
Massachusetts Public School Championship with both the 1st and 2nd
varsity fours taking home silver medals in their events.
Winter 2007 - G-ROW
travels to Atlanta for Spring Break

This February vacation G-ROW headed down to
Atlanta, Georgia to get a head start on the spring season. While on the trip the
team rowed twice a day, hiked the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, toured
Georgia Tech University and visited downtown Atlanta.
The Atlanta Rowing Club hosted the team,
providing boats, oars, coaching launches, gas, and even cooking the team a
delicious pasta dinner. Thanks to ARC’s generosity, G-ROW had everything we
needed to make it a successful and productive week of rowing.
The team’s rowing improved tremendously over
the course of the week. The eight days of intensive training gave the varsity an
opportunity to focus on individual technical changes, while the novice learned
to row together by all eight and even began doing racing starts by the end of
the week. For many of the girls this was a trip filled with firsts; first time
traveling away from home, first time on a plane, first time going hiking, and
even the first time in a boat. These new and challenging experiences taught the
girls valuable lessons about themselves and their teammates.

G-ROW hires Academic
Coordinator
G-ROW is pleased to announce that we have hired Ed Suglia as Academic
Coordinator to oversee and expand the academic support offered at G-ROW.
Ed has extensive experience teaching in the Boston Public Schools and as an
academic coordinator for student-athletes at several NCAA programs. He
holds a PhD. in Higher Education Administration and will be instrumental in
establishing a more effective tutoring program for our athletes. He is not
a rower (yet!) but he will be at the boathouse for practices and competitions to
work with the girls to individually tailor our academic
services. He is very enthusiastic and committed to the academic
success of all of our rowers. Welcome Ed!!

G-ROW’s 2005 Susan Bulkeley
Butler Scholarship Winner
Congratulations to Maureen Tong, recipient of
this year’s Susan Bulkeley Butler Scholarship. The Butler Scholarship is a
partial, four-year scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who has
demonstrated excellence in every aspect of her participation in G-ROW.
Maureen joined the team as a sophomore at the
John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Sciences. This year she rowed in
the junior four in the Head of the Charles and was in the varsity eight for the
entire spring. Maureen proved to be one of the most dedicated members of the
team, rarely missing practice, and impressed her teammates and coaches with her
tireless effort and aggressiveness in the boat. Maureen is also an excellent
student and will be attending the University of Massachusetts in Boston this
fall. We are very proud of Maureen and her quiet but invaluable contribution to
the team will be greatly missed next year.
Our hope is to grow the Butler Scholarship Fund
to make it available to more G-ROW graduates next year. If you would like to
contribute to the Butler Scholarship fund, please contact Program Director Ellen
Minzner at 617-782-9083 or ellen@growboston.org.
G-ROW Boston
Spring Training Trip
G-ROW
BOSTON has been invited by Tempe
Junior Crew to spend a week in February training in Tempe, Arizona. Nineteen girls and
three coaches will be flying to
Tempe
for a week of sun, rowing, and team bonding. Dan
Duxbury, coach of the Tempe Juniors, has generously offered to loan
equipment to the team and arrange housing with host families for the
week. At the end of the week, the girls will participate in their first
ever preseason regatta, competing against junior crews from all over the
southwest.
We
will be holding several fundraisers to help pay for the trip, including
an erg-a-thon on January 22. Healthworks
Fitness Centers is hosting the event
at their Porter Square
facility in Cambridge. For more information
on how you can help support us in this effort, please email info@growboston.org
or call the G-ROW office at 617.782.9083.
Resolute
8 is Donated to G-ROW!
G-ROW BOSTON and Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) have
received an unexpected gift from Bill O’Donnell of
Darien,
Connecticut. O’Donnell,
a member of the Greenwich Rowing Club, bought the winning ticket for the
National Rowing
Foundation’s (NRF) raffle to benefit the US Olympic Crews.
His prize? A brand-new Resolute
racing shell. Rather than keep the
shell for himself, O’Donnell is donating the ticket back to the NRF
for the benefit of G-ROW and CRI.
O’Donnell chose G-ROW because it brings rowing to
those who normally would not have the opportunity to enjoy the sport.
“I hope the shell brings great joy to those who row it,” says
O’Donnell.
