Wear
loose, comfortable workout clothing. You should also have hats and
sweatshirts for rowing in colder weather. It is important to layer so
that you have clothing to take of if you get too hot, and more clothing
to put on if you get too cold. Always bring a water bottle. Do
you have to know how to swim? No
swimming experience is necessary. All rowers practice in a life jacket
until they can pass a swim test. Free swimming lessons are available
with the G-ROW Boston team during winter training. Are
life jackets required? Rowers
are required to wear a life jacket until they have passed the swim test.
Once a rower demonstrates competency by passing the swim test, her life
jacket and other safety equipment are kept onboard the coach’s launch
in case of emergency during practice or competition. Do
the boats ever flip? Very,
very rarely will a boat flip over. A boat may “swamp” –fill with
water up to the sides in very rough conditions- but it will NOT sink.
All rowers are required to view a safety video before their first on the
water practice demonstrating what to do in such rare circumstances. Do
you row in the rain? Rowing
practices take place rain or shine, unless conditions are unsafe. High
winds, cold air and water temperatures, and lightning are examples of
when water practice is called off. We will call your school to make an
announcement if practice is cancelled. How
old do you have to be to join? All
girls in grades 7-12 are welcome to join G-ROW Boston. |
